Welcome to the +1 RPG Blog! My Name is Patrick Delaney and tabletop role playing games have been a part of my life since I was a kid. I have always been the kind of person who will get lost in a good story. Books, movies, video games, I love them all, but there is something special about flexing that creative muscle yourself. In reality, that need is the driving force in this endeavor you see before you.
So it is a pleasure to meet you kind sir or fair madam.
My First Time
I remember the first time I “played” a role playing game. I use quotes because I had no idea what I was doing, but honestly, that is rather overrated anyway I find. I was in middle school and my friends and I would visit our local game store to look at the models or buy a few magic cards, when we saw a group of older men sitting around a table playing a game. I heard one of them say “I draw my gun on the bartender!” After listening for a moment, all I wanted to do was shoot bartenders and steal beer.. a D&D natural right off the bat, I know. I asked to play.. To this day I feel bad for those men in retrospect. They wanted to say no, because we would de-rail the entire game (we had that look about us) and it could look odd for a bunch of older men to be playing games with a bunch of 12 year old kids they didn’t know. On the other hand, how do you tell a kid they can’t play a game with you? They ended up letting us play, and the only thing I remember was my character trying to steal a beer and a large bar fight breaking out before we had to escape. I found out years later that we “played” first edition Dead Lands, but regardless of the game or system.. it was the excitement of driving the action forward. There just are not many mediums that allow you such creative freedom the way role playing games do. The bartender did not make it, and I never got that beer. So started my love of tabletop RPGs.
If you love fantasy worlds, creatures, and maybe a pinch of science fiction, then I hope my little corner of the internet sparks your curiosity about role playing games or maybe different worlds/systems to explore. Dungeons and Dragons and Middle Earth are fan favorites, which I love to write about, but have you ventured into the Dead Lands? or investigated the cults of Cthulhu? I hope to cover many different systems, review upcoming books, and play with the lore of monsters.
So welcome, you have just received +1 to RPGs.
