Dungeons and Dragons is celebrating 5 years of 5th edition by re-releasing Tyranny of Dragons. So, we thought it would be fun to cover the Mask of the Dragon Queen, which features prominently in this adventure, for this weeks Magic Item Monday. There are five dragon masks out in the world, however, when two or more are brought together, they magically transform into the Mask of the Dragon Queen. Described as a dragon-like visage that covers the wearers face and adorned by five chromatic dragon heads that sit atop like a roaring crown. Each individual mask has properties that relate to their dragon type, and the wearer can choose which affects they would like to utilize:

In addition to gaining all five resistances, and the option to select from the abilities listed, the wearer is also granted darkvision, blindsight, and can understand Draconic. The Mask of the Dragon Queen is critical to the Tryanny of Dragons adventure, as dragon cultists work to locate the various dragon masks to assist in their ultimate goal of bringing Tiamat back from the nine hells. Even if you don’t plan on running this specific adventure, if you find yourself using dragon cultists, then outfitting their leader with one of the dragon masks, or the fully realized mask itself, could add a power boost to what would otherwise be a normal caster-type villain. The Mask of the Dragon Queen may also serve as a plot device as the party attempts to parley with evil-aligned dragons that would normally eat them on sight. However, upon seeing a visage of their God, the dragon grants the party the opportunity to speak. Now, this is a powerful item and should be used with greater story implications. If you do use this item to bolster your villain, upon his/her inevitable downfall, have the mask fall to tatters so the player’s cannot utilize the full mask. The power holding the mask together dissipates and a single dragon mask is left. This way you can reward your players without handing over a wondrous item. The party may not fully understand the power of the mask, and must choose to seek out lore masters to truly understand what they have stumbled upon. Either way, if you are planning on using dragons in your campaign, employing a single mask or the full might of the Mask of the Dragon Queen, can add a fun twist to your game.
